I play on a standard 1920x1080 monitor. Every time I launch the game, 3/4ths of my monitor turn black, the bottom left hand corner of my monitor continues to show my desktop in a square = to 1/4th of screen. This goes on for about 60 seconds and then the game launches. This has always been annoying but never a deal breaker until recently. I'm now in a situation where that weird launch thing is still the case, but if I minimize the game for any amount of time and maximize it, I get a fully black screen and I have end task to the game and sit through the whole launch sequence again. It's really annoying because sometimes I'll be in the middle of a fight and my game will minimize inexplicably without my consent. It's rare, but it happens, and when it does I know I have no choice but to restart the game and rejoin the server. Also, sometimes I need to minimize to respond to an email or do something else quick for work and at this point I know I may as well just quit the game entirely before doing that, which is a huge inconvenience. Is there a way to play this game in a bordered window? I can't even seem to get borderless windowed to work. I've tried Steam launch options and manually setting the resolution in the BF2Hub launcher. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
There are some settings in the BF2Hub Launcher that you can try to change. If that doesn't work you need to find your BF2 profile directory (C:\Users\<PC USERNAME>\Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles)
Then find your account profile, it will be in one of the folders named 0001, 0002 etc depending on how many accounts you have.
Once you have found the account you play on open the Video.con file with a text editor
Make sure the settings are as you desire them, when you are done editing it, save & close.
Now right click the Video.con file and go to properties. Set the file to read-only and apply.
Finally copy the Video.con file (not the contents but the whole file)
And go back to folder that contains all the bf2 accounts and go to the "Default" folder.
Paste the Video.con you copied earlier, and overwrite the existing one. Make sure the Video.con file is still set to read-only.
That should hopefully fix your issues with resolution.
EDIT: If the problem persists you most likely require an ALT+TAB fix. You should be able to find that by googling.
Thanks! I realized I had compatibility settings for the game's executable set to Windows Vista... oops. Turning that off seems to have resolved the issue
