To me it seems that you can play both things for fun or in a more professional way (as Wildcat said, with maps and radios etc.).
Despite that the Airsoft bullets have less bullet-drop and thus a more straight trajectory than the Paintballs. On the other hand I've heard that if such an airsoft-bullet hits on a thick part of clothing it is hard to recognize (and as lots of airsoft guys run around in military vests and clothing packed with mags and secondary weapons and shit they have lots of such thick layers...). So if the shooter hasnt seen that he hit and the opponent doesn't want to or hasn't recognized that he has been hit...he can just keep on playing, although he is "dead". However there is some watching personnel AFAIK. Well this won't happen with paintball...a hit can be felt and be seen very good I'd suppose...
And to that "we never left gooey painted stuff behind us": I don't think you collected all the bullets of the airsoft after you shot, right (considering you were using maps and playing outside)?
Those airsoft guys are insane...buying reticles, taclights n shit and they even have grenades filled with those bullets...and rocket-launchers.
If I could I'd play airsoft...
10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain and a 100% reason to remember the name ;D
"So what if its a female gamer? You cant call it teabaggin... I now introduce the term "lipdip" for the fairer sexed gamers."

If we play outside it's biodegradable balls - AFAIK it takes 6 months in earth. And its always with ground owner permission, we pay to use the place.
Terrain get closed but you can always get random guy with a dog (always have pepperspray) or a mushroom picker. We always have a safeword on which eveybody freeze, stop shooting in such case.
If we play inside - it's a prepared killing house, then we can savely use grenades (frag and flash) we actually used reallike flashbangs from build based on terrorist handbook. We used these for hostage scenarios
and killing house gets cleaned for money we pay to use it.

this doesnt happen on organized games. maybe on bigger events. We never operate solo, its squad based. And this stuff is just not possible to pull. The guy is excluded and banned from group by community. Anathema
standart procedure is to shout "I got hit", hand with weapon or red clothing up. Wait for medic or go to mainbase. We even consider weapon destroyed if it gets hit and guy is not hit - use hand weapon. We also consider soft cover to be soft. If guys hides behind a plywood he is dead if wood gets hit.
Let me remind you - this is all news from 5 years ago. BUt I remember ASG was great
